There are many film companies that we could choose to distribute our film. I have found out that where are many film companies that distribute different types of film.
DreamWorks SKG, DreamWorks animation, 20th century fox, 20th century fox animation, blue sky studious, fox audiometric and many many more.
But wait! .. you may be wondering what this whole production company issue this is about?
‘This is a list of filmproduction distributing companies. There are Major Studios that produce films and Independent Production Companies. A company may specialize in producing their in-house films or own subsidiary development companies. Major Production companies often distribute films from Independent Production Companies. This list includes both active and no longer active (defunct) companies. Active Production Companies are either run by themselves or as a subsidiary.’
I have chosen to pick a film production company called: Universal studious because this production company is a worldwide company this is very successful in what they do. This company has produced many different well known movies such as: The wolf man, jaws, Halloween, Jurassic park, and the sting.
As this film company has produced major films that have been very successful in the past. As this film is a new movie money from previous films will be needed. Convergence will help connect with big films with the small films that universal has made to help everybody make money.
Within my group all the individuals were allocated roles to help this group produce the short film drama that you see today. This took much planning and commitment by each team member. These titles were inspired by different films such as seven.
We came up with many suggestions for the title of the film. Once we knew the basic synopsis of the film we thought of a basic idea of it. We came up with: kidnapped, lost, abused, what life was like, obsessive, the killer and violent love. However from all of these we have come up with the finishing title of DISSOCIATION!
Setting/location
From researching the setting and possible locations of my film we have come up with two final locations. The setting was very distinctive because it is a typical place in which children play, socialize and have fun. I have used the typical conventions to portray my characters. I have used a playground in which children play in their natural settings when they are happy. In contrast to this I have used the opposite of a playground setting to portray that the child is stuck and cannot be freed. The shed that we used was very dark and claustrophobic; this was used because it is not a place in which you would think of naturally taking a child.
Costumes and props
Because we had very few characters we only had one costume shown in the thriller. The little boy was shown in a white t-shirt which was dirty to show that he has been in that for a long time.
The only props that where shown in the thriller was the drill that was used to drill the little boy’s leg.
The kidnapper/molester was shown with black tape round his finger.
The little boy was shown in the beginning playing on the different apparatus in the children’s playground, this consisted of: swings, the round - about, sea saw and many more.
Camerawork and editing
The camera work and editing is very specific according to the genera and mis-en-scene of the film. We used various different skills to help the audience engage with the film. We used a variety of different zooming, close ups, extreme close ups, long shots, establishing shots, panning and many more to cater to the thriller audience. Different shots where used to show how the kid nipper/molester treated the child. We are shown shows like the molester sticking his tongue out ready to lick this child.
Title font and styles
The titles that we have used in the title sequence where used and adapted to help the conventions be as real as possible. we have chosen to do the titles in black and red to show that there might be blood are goore in the movie.
Story and how the opening set it up
The basic story line was created by the group then strengthened and grew into the story that we have produced today. The main story line is about a boy who was happily playing in the park and then was kidnapped and molester. We are trying to challenge the typical conventions of real life media by trying to make it as real as possible. We try to do this by making the editing, characters, enigma, and mis-en-scene as real as possible.
The first shot that we use sets the opening up by letting the audience know before all the drama happens what the child was like before his got kidnapped.
Genre and how the opening sets it
We have set the genre of this thriller film by introducing the music and scenes. The character is first introduced in the thriller film playing in a children’s playground playing happily and it then cuts into a torture scene.
How characters are introduced/establishes
In the opening of my thriller film we have been introduced to two characters. These characters are very important in setting the storyline. The first character that we see is a little boy that plays in the park. This scene is very important because it shows that the child is happy playing in a natural environment, we are then shown a shot of the child playing on the swing and it then fades into the child disappearing off the swings but the swing is still moving. This shot is very important because it shows that the child is going missing.
From this shot we are then introduced to the final character. We do not know who or what he is but all we know is that the man has taken the child from their natural/normal setting and is abusing the child. This character is introduced in the film by showing his happiness and laughter of him abusing a young little boy. This character is antagonists’ character is shows in the film using many distorted images and sounds. The characters are also introduced by the sound track music that is playing. When the little boy is playing in the park we hear happy music however when the antagonists is introduced the music changes into a more upbeat and scary sounds.
Special effects that you have used
From doing the title sequence we have learned how to use the special effects on the apple Mac computers. We have used the special effects in many different scenes to help engage the audience and to keep them amused to our thriller film.
We used programs like final cut pro to add effects into the thriller. By using final cut pro it allowed us to control fully what happens and what effects we put in the film. With this program we were able to cut, sow down, speed up and many more.
Lighting
The lighting that was used was very dependent on the scene that was created. In the beginning it was very light to show happiness and freedom however in the second scene of the film we are shown many shadows and dark areas.
We also used many shadows and many different lighting effects in the practice shots. When we were filming we used siloets door frame shows to show characters in different ways. The lighting is very important because it shows also show different power status levels on different characters.
Based on the group synopsis I have decided to take a few pictures of different locations that I think might be good for the story lines. I have used a variety of different interiors and exterior shots to decide the best. Having these images will allow my group and I to make better decisions in which location would be better.
The drama studio
The drama studio could be an ideal setting for me because it allows me to control the variables. For example filming would not depend on the weather or an other environmental issues that could disrupt filming. Using this drama studio could be ideal because it is already equipped with full lighting and no other external noise e.g cars or background noise. This would be good if we decided to do a mono loge and the character needs special types of shots that only in a studio you can produce.
Outside a school
Outside a school would be suitable because it shows that the child is young and that the child is still in school. Filming outside a school could be an advantage because it shows other children and his peer group in school.
A park
The park would be an ideal place to film because we could film the child playing and having fun before film get into the main story line. There are many different shots that we can use in a playground and using the different playground equipment.
We have conducted a questionnaire to find out what the specific relationship between the type of audience and types of thriller films that watch. We have done this to analyse the market and what makes a successful thriller film. This will help our production company make smarter choices in what conventions to use in this thriller film. We have found that: We have asked an equal number of male and females to get a equal response rate. This shows that our research is not unfair. 2) The age ranging from under 14 to 26+ give us a large amount of data that we can use and analysis. The difference between the under 14 age group and a 26+ target audience would be the level of violence and sexual activity that the audience would see in the movie. We posted out questionnaire on facebook and we have found out that with more children into 5 – 17 year olds. . Due to our peer groups and we have only managed to collect data from the groups we socialize with. We have found that our biggest target audience between 5-17so this is our prime audience.
3) The ethnicity question was very important because it shows us which background people come from. We found out that we got more Asian other and black Caribbean than any other ethnic groups, this means that our film has to be very diverse and multi cultural to everybody. 4) The sexuality question was very important in our studies because it shown us what type of characters we should be used in the play. If we had a more homophobic audience or guy audience we would change our broadcasting to suit the audience. 5) The parent’s profession was very important because it shows us what type of humour can be used in the play if we had a middle class audience we would have to change the langue to suit this type of audience. We have found out that we have more of a working/middle class audience so we would have to mix and match the language used. 6) Giving us a brief idea of your favourite thriller film lets us know what we should base the conventions and basic idea of what you like. You could say it’s like a template on what you already like and we use this template like a stencil to form another thriller film. The most common movies that were mentioned was thriller films like: Saw, the grudge and seven 7) Using the typical conventions of thriller films are very important because you can either use the general conventions or you can be advance and move onto a more advance level. We have found out that people would want more of an advance level in the conventions meaning more violence and blood. Also special effects were also popular in making thriller films more scary and interesting. 8) Within the thriller genera there are many different sub genera’s that you can split movies into. As horror is such a wide open genera, it has to be broken down into many sections. The questionnaire results have proven that people like more of an action and psychological type of movie rather than a political horror. 9) Story lines are very important because it sets the bass lines and the whole story of the image that the director has. With a good story line you can engage the reader and keep then interested in suspense. The best story lines that people have chosen was from their favourite films like: seven and I know what you done last summer. These movies are important because it gives us a template on what the basics conventions a successful film needs.
Costumes are very important in television and film because it sets a visible image of what the director is thinking and it also presents ideas. Costumes can also engage the audience and draw their attention and get a better upstanding of the character presented. If the costumes and props are wrong it would mess up the understanding of the story line. It is very important to get the props and costumes right.
Suits can give a professional look towards a character:
We follow Tyrone’s revenge quest into the kidnapping of his wife two children. Tyrone smith lived a typical happy family life when his wife and two children when there were suddenly kidnapped by Arab forces. The happy family once lived the high life in Applevil both with very successful careers in acting and directing. This high profiled life attracted attention by both the public and media as they were known as positive influences across the world. As well as positive support Tyrone also revived death threats on a weekly basis threatening to kidnap and torture his family. Paying no attention to these letters and phone calls, one day Tyrone was on his way to work when he received a phone calling telling him that his wife and children has just been kidnapped and he must pay a ransom if he wanted the rest of his greater family to live. The next day Tyrone then receives another package suspiciously wondering what’s inside. He then receives a video tape of his wife getting raped and killings of his two children. To find who done this to his family Tyrone and two of his closest family friends go on a wild killings spree to find out who done this. Days pass by until the trio get trapped and separated by the Arab forces. As clues all begin to add up and a final killer is exposed one of the trio gets violently tortured and killed. While faith and hope weakens they then get a message from his wife letting us know that she is still alive.

The horror movie that I have chosen to analyses is a movie is called ‘Saw 6’ which was released on October 23 2009. This 11 billion dollar movie was directed by Kevin Greutert and produced by mark burg. The movie starts off with a black screen with digectic sounds of chains rattling and a strong sound of gushing wind because I have analysed ‘saw 6’ there is already a high expectation level of the movies. The director is trying to create a mis-en-scean from the first parts of the movie by adding these sound effects. After this shot the director shows the next shot which is a title sequence which says ‘Long gate’ which I presume is the production company. In the middle if this shot the audience is shows a red fire which is burning and slowing covering the screen. The fire may represent torture and pain or it might represent hell. Hell is known to religious people as being a place in which you go after life if you didn’t not get into heaven. The audience was also shown that it was burning uncontrollably which may represent that the pain that the torture given out may be uncontrollably. It then fades away into the next shot which slows the title ‘twisted gate’ with chains and spikes wrapped around it. This might be linked to the first shot that we are shown with the fire and it might be the idea of the torture weapons. Also when we hear these digetic sounds we also thing of prison and the fact that punishment is being informed when you are locked up. As well as the chains we are also shown spikes that are factors of protection or a factor of torture. So I have establishes from these two shots of the movie that the main element of this movie is torture and punishment. The audience would expect this because there is such a high rating and expectation level of the past saw movies. The movie then fades away and the title sequence of the names of directors and characters that start in ‘saw 6’ are shown. The title ‘gates released’ is shown which could have multipurpose meanings. In religious terms ‘gates released’ could mean that hell is being unravelled meaning that evil is coming out. Or it could have positive connotations by the goodness will over come evil but in this movie I highly dough a positive introduction to this movie. The main movie starts off with a close up shot of a hairy mans foot. The camera follows the body which is lay down on a bed. The camera tracks this body following the body from feet to head to then reveal the setting and location of the movie. The camera then zooms out to then establish that they are in a hospital. There are various different types of equipment to tell us that we are in a hospital because we are shown the tools that doctors used and the whole mis-en-scean. The camera cuts to then show a close up of a man pushing the door which creates on screen sound of footsteps and opening of the swinging hospital door. We are then shown the close up of the doors title called the morgue. The doctors are all wearing all the correct operating costumes and then we are shown a close up of the tools that the doctors will be using to operate on the body laid down on the table. The camera then pans to the revels all the equipment that the doctor will be using.
After establishing the setting the director moves into the parts nasty parts gory parts of the movie. Another doctor walks into the room and non digecte sound is exchanged in a conversation about what they are going to do with the body. They then grab a knife and they rip and tare different parts of the body. The director then zooms in on the different pars of the cut up body to make the audience jump and scared. After this hospital sequence the director establishes the saw theme and then cuts into a very interesting action sequence which the director establishes that two mean are in a dark room with chains round their neck. The sound track changes due to the suspense and mood of the movie changing. The movie then shows close ups of important props that will be used in this scene. Knives, hammers, swords and other dangerous weapons all have close camera shots because they are important in the scene. We are then shown two men that are chained up and one is missing their eyes and another man has his lips sowed together. The director used shot reverse shots to establish the sound that comes each of them. As the action sequence begins we are then shown a motor that is placed in the middle of the room this is slowly drawing them both together. We are shown a close up on the distance that they are apart from each other and we are also shown a close up that the key that they both need is on each other. Form this we establish that these characters are being punished for some reason because they are locked up and they can not get free.

We are four AS media students who have come together to create our thriller opening sequence. Our team consists of Kerfi, Adem, Tarric and Ramin. We have chosen our roles based on our strengths which we discovered during the preliminary exercise. The roles we have chosen are: Ramin – Producer Tarric – Director Kerfi – Camera man Adem – Editor Despite having allocated roles, we plan to assist each other on areas we find more difficult in order to maximise the quality of our work.
